Long Road Home

Research one of the following three questions. Then, post a summary of your thoughts to this blog post.

1) What is happening now in Kosovo or in the area of the Balkans?

2) Meli says that "Adem Jashari was our George Washington," a patriot.  Whom would you consider a modern day American patriot? Use the news media to help you in making your decision. Explain the reasons for your choice.

3) Two languages are spoken in Kosovo: Serbian & Albanian.  How does this affect Meli? Do language differences divide a country or bring its people together? Can you find evidence in the news media for your ideas...on an international level, a national level, in your state, or in your community?

Blog posts should be a minimum of 1 paragraph response.

  3. I would think of the marines as patriots. They go into terrible lands and conditions to save us from forced religion and beliefs. Without them we would have been enslaved by tyrants. We would not know freedom. They are the brave and they deserve respect.

  4. I would have to say a modren day patriot would have to be Muhammad Ali.
In 1999 Muhammad was crowned '' sportsman of the century'' by Sports Illustrated. He won the world heavy weight boxing championship three times, and won the North American Boxing Fedration championship as well as an olympic gold medal.

  5. The language affects Meli because she has to watch what one she speaks in front of people. Languages split up countries because if your from Mexico you would speak Spanish. If you were from America you would speak English. You could find proof from a lot of people. LIke your community and new.

  6. 3) I think it would affect her when she is around town and by the Serbian kid or adults. The two languages would probably bring them apart unless they could speak both. It would bring them apart because they would not now what the were talking about or what they could due to them if they were mad. Well just a fact you do not like people who you do not understand.

  7. Q3) The language Meli uses affects her because she has to speak serbian to the Serbian cops so she doesn't get in trouble with them. I think the languages would split the countries apart because you could get in trouble if you speak the wrong language in front of the wrong people. an example of this would be if you are from a different country and come to the U.S you might have to learn a different language.

  8. 3) The language affects Meli because she is around both languages at all times. She cant speak Albanian to someone who is Serbian because she could be in serious trouble then. Yes I think it divides countries because it just gives people another reason to be different. Being different can be good in some situations but can get people in trouble. People stereo type so it can be a big problems in towns because people think that all Mexicans are in gangs.

  9. 3) Meli is affected by the separation of the language difference, because if she said something to a Serbian police officer, in Albanian, something may happen to her that might be terrible. The two languages, in a country may be good and bad. Depends on the countries problems. Like here in America, some people speak Spanish, French, German, etc., we don't throw them in jail, or do bad things to them(some people might, but the government may not.). But, like in Kosovo, you could be killed if you did something like that. It all depends on the country, and what problems they have.

  11. 3) The languages affect Meli by her not being Serbian. She naturally uses Albanian so when people from her country use Serbian she has to also to not get caught. I think it could possibly split up countries if you are using the wrong language towards people, it all just depends on the country though. An example would be if a person from China went to India, they could say something that degrades that person, or their country.

  14. 3) This effects Meli because she has to learn all these languages and if she speaks the wrong language in front of the wrong people she could get killed. I think that different languages do both they can divide and bring together. They can divide by not knowing what people are saying, and not liking someone just because they are from that ethnic group. It can bring together by being bilingual you can talk and get to know many different groups and cultures there for bring them together. It can bring together, and divide all countries around the world.

  15. 2) i think that George W. Bush would be an american patriot. i know that some people have thoughts that he ran our world into the ground, but i think he was the best out of the recent presidents. He was possibly the best because he was very down to earth and he thought just like a regular american would. the office also didn't have to look for his birth certificate. we also didn't question that he was an american citizen. George was here to help ALL of us but just not baby us. i think Obama is babying some of the citizens out there with packing them full of well fare and other tax payers money. i feel that its wrong for someone that doesn't give any effort to get a job or work for there money to collect well fare. i feel that its right for someone that cant work or doesn't have anyone to help them out or works hard just doesn't make enough money to support his family to be on well fare.

  16. 3) Language affects people of different race in every country, here in the U.S. even. When you hear a Mexican person talk you giggle and think they sound funny, or any other different ace for that matter. It can also benefit a society because expanding your knowledge of other cultures is good. I think a lot of people never think about learning another language because they think I was here first you dont belong, so people need to learn other languages of common races in the U.S.

  22. Q3) the languages in Kosovo affect Meli by making her a little smarter. She is ale to trick a lot of serbs to think she is one. It would be very beneficial if she wanted a job. Languages can bring people together because if you learn how to speak a language and you learn it you will be able to communicate with more people in your country. I do not really see much in the media that brings our country or community together except when theres spanish news the people who speak spanish know whats going on in the U.S.A.

  23. Q(3) THe languages that Meli speaks affects her in many ways. It is nessesary to know both languages because she needs a way to get past the serbian officers and, for home and school she needs to be able to speak her own language. In Meli's situation it divides the people because they are rivals so if the police man was to find out that she was albanian she would have got punished in some way and it could have effected her family. It can be found on all levels of thought because foreign exchange students could have their own oppinnion about us and we could have the same about them.

So people who don't listen to their parents could be considered a patriot. Also like a war patriot kinda. So like the army men/women could be patriots of today. I think that Michael A. Monsoor is like a patriot because he went away from the orders that were given to him in the war and he did the bold thing and that ended up helping the war conflict. So thats my thoughts

Yes I think it does divides the countries because they are able to talk there normal languages and they can act the way they want to and they can be themselves. Yes I can find it because it goes on all around us and we just don't really care for it but it does really go on around in our news and when people talk. Languages divide a country because illegal Mexicans come into to our country speaking spanish while we speak english. 31. 3) Having two languages effects Meli because she has to know when and where to use them. I think having two languages would divide a country beause some people would not be able to understand other people. 32. 3. The fact that Meli can speak three languages is beneficial to her in many ways but the fact she has to be so vigilant about when she has to choose which to speak in has to daunting. It seems that when two parties don't speak the same language that the communication process is so difficult they don't bother communicate safficiently to understand one another. Examples of this are like when you go on vacation to another country and at the special hotel or resort you are staying at everyone speaks English so everyone can understand.

  33. Having more than one language in a county can be good or bad. It could mean that more than one language could also mean more than one religion in the county which could lead to people to trying to convince the other group of people to join their religion which could lead to anger, confusion, fights, and or war. This could also be a good thing because not understanding eachother could make them want to get to know the other language and get to know the other people from the other language. Meli is in danger because if she speaks to the wrong person at the wrong time in the wrong language she could get beaten, peresecuted, or even killed liked Jashari and his family.

Speaking two or more languages in a country can be useful. For Meli, she is able to make Serbians think that she is also a Serb by speaking THEIR language. At home, though, she can speak HER language, Albanian. Speaking two languages is very useful for Meli because it keeps her safe. On the other hand, having more than one language in a country can be bad, too, because you might not be able to understand them. If you can't understand them, it could possibly lead to dangerous situations. Some examples of international communication problems are when people go to countries that speak different languages. I am going to Italy this year, and I have to learn to speak a little Italian so I can communicate. Without being able to communicate, there could be possible misunderstanding, which could be bad.

  36. The terms Kosovo War or Kosovo conflict refer to two sequential, and at times parallel, armed conflicts in Kosovo province, then part of FR Yugoslav Republic of Serbia; from early 1998[24] to 1999, there was an armed conflict initiated by the ethnic Albanian "Kosovo Liberation Army" (KLA), who sought independence (classified by Serbia as terrorists), against the Serbian police and Yugoslav Military. From March 24, 1999 to June 11, 1999,[25] NATO launched an air campaign on FR Yugoslavia, while the KLA continued battles with Yugoslav Security Forces, amidst a massive population displacement estimated to be close to 800,000 people.

The KLA, formed in 1991, began attacking police stations and Yugoslav government offices in February 1996, which resulted in an increase in the number of security forces, and escalation into a conflict, although it was initially viewed as an insurgency. The KLA was regarded by the US as a terrorist group until 1998 when it was de-listed for classified reasons,[26][27] and then the UK and the US lobbied France to do the same.[28] The U.S. and NATO then cultivated diplomatic relationships with the KLA leaders,[27][29][30] This happened despite the fact that General Klaus Naumann (Chairman of NATO Military Committee) stated that "Ambassador Walker stated in the NAC (North Atlantic Council) that the majority of violations was caused by the KLA."[30]

In 1999 the KLA was officially disbanded and their members joined the UCPMB in the Preševo Valley[31], and the NLA and ANA in the armed ethnic conflict in Macedonia.[32] UNMIK instituted NGOs within Kosovo such as the Kosovo Protection Corps (in accordance with UNSC resolution 1244 which required the establishment of a civilian emergency protection body to replace the former KLA) and the Kosovo Police (mainly of KLA veterans).[33]

NATO countries promoted the war in Kosovo as the first humanitarian war[34] based on short-term military reports and casualty reports that were later criticized as highly inaccurate.[35] It was the center of news headlines for months, and gained a massive amount of coverage and attention from the international community and media. The NATO bombing and surrounding events have remained controversial.[36]

  37. 3) I think that languages can bring countries together. I say this because it will make you more knowledgeable knowing more. With Meli's case she has to know when and where to use her language. If she doesn't use it in the right spot they won't know what she is talking about. Back to the beginning it can take you apart to because it means you can't decide on the same language.

They are essentially losing money from the website. A patriot is not just a war hero, but can be a cook that feeds homeless. Jimmy Wales is making us a pan of knowledge that is at our fingertips. If we didn't have this knowledge than we would have to look in a book and we know that people don't always like books.

If it does bring them together it is because they really understand each other and that could be their only difference. Meli was affected because if she were to speak the wrong language to the wrong person she could be arrested. Or if she were to be overheard speaking one language by a person of the other language could report her. In the US the americans don't really like people of other races and tounges because they're different and we can't handle that fact so we just don't really talk and become friends.
